Can missing diamonds and gemstones be replaced?

In most cases, missing diamonds and gemstones can be replaced. Whether a diamond has been lost from the shoulder of a ring, a halo setting, a cluster ring, an eternity ring or a solitaire engagement ring, suitable replacement stones can be sourced and set. Before replacing the stone, we inspect the setting to identify any worn claws or damage that may have caused the stone to come loose. In many cases, any necessary repairs to the setting can be completed at the same time as the stone replacement.

Why do diamonds and gemstones fall out?

The most common cause of stone loss is worn claws or settings that no longer hold the stone securely. Over time, everyday wear, accidental knocks and general use can weaken the setting, increasing the risk of a diamond or gemstone falling out. We recommend stopping wearing the jewellery as soon as a stone is lost so the setting can be inspected before further damage occurs. In many cases, if one stone has fallen out, other stones may also be loose and should be checked at the same time.

How do you match a replacement diamond or gemstone?

We match replacement stones using a combination of measurements, shape, carat weight, colour, clarity, certification (if applicable) and overall appearance. Where possible, we also use photographs of the jewellery before the stone was lost to help achieve the closest match. We can source both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds, along with a wide range of natural and laboratory-created gemstones, depending on your requirements and budget. For larger or more significant stones, we can often arrange for clients to view suitable options before proceeding.

Which stones can be replaced?

We replace all types of diamonds including modern round brilliant, old cut and European cut diamonds. We can source both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds, along with sapphires, rubies, emeralds, aquamarines, topaz, alexandrite and many other precious and semi-precious gemstones. If you are unsure of the stone type, we can often identify it during inspection.

Can chipped diamonds and gemstones be repaired?

In some cases, chipped diamonds and gemstones can be re-polished to remove minor damage and improve their appearance. The suitability of repair depends on the location and severity of the chip, as well as the type of stone involved. Where repair is not possible or economically viable, we can source and fit a suitable replacement stone.

How long does a gemstone replacement take?

Most diamond and gemstone replacement services take approximately one week to complete, depending on the stone required and the condition of the setting. If additional repairs such as claw re-tipping or setting reconstruction are needed, the process may take slightly longer. Priority services may be available for urgent requirements.

What is the process?

Every item is carefully inspected before any replacement stone is fitted. We check for worn claws, damaged settings and any underlying issues that may have caused the stone to be lost. Where necessary, claws can be re-tipped or settings rebuilt before the new stone is set. The jewellery is then professionally cleaned and polished before being returned.

How much does diamond and gemstone replacement cost?

Diamond and gemstone replacement services generally start from £200. The final cost depends on the type, size and quality of the replacement stone, as well as any setting repairs that may be required. Following inspection, we will provide a quotation before any work is carried out.
